Manufactured in Mexico in 1996, the TA Triumph-Adler Gabriele “TopType” (AKA Gabriele 150) takes its design cues from Olivetti.

If a futuristic design slightly reminiscent of the Mario Bellini-designed Olivetti ET Personal 55 (1989) won’t convince you …

… perhaps an Olivetti-compatible printwheel and ribbon will:

There’s also a recognizably Olivetti-like serial number alongside the TA Triumph-Adler1 badge on the underside of the machine:

A power key is located on the keyboard itself …

… a clue which identifies the TopType as a close relative of the Olivetti Linea 101/Dora 201, two typewriters also manufactured in Mexico in 1995:

A “TopType” design improvement is a sculptural keyboard cover that doubles as a paper rest:

An improvement on the flip-up paper rest and the cheaper-looking transparent plastic – (Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET)?) cover that sits over the keys of the Linea/Dora:

Other “TopType” design innovations are dual “bug-eyed” platen knobs and a squarer transparent ribbon cover, which is easily opened up by lifting the tabs on each side:

The legend on the keycaps of the “TopType” appear to be dye-sub rather than pad-printed. Unfortunately, the print speed lets this typewriter down: The stated print speed in the instruction guide is “12 cps (max)”, but most of the time it feels like a pedestrian 10.

(Edited 20/10/2023) Turns out the cable stow compartment is roomier than I thought (even with a UK plug).

The Gabriele TopType/150 was released alongside a “DS” display model:

The last pairing in a long line that started with the Gabriele 8008/L in 1982 …

… continued with the Gabriele 7007/L in 1986/1987 …

… and the Gabriele 100/100 DS/110 in 1988/1989:

A special “Cyclo” model had a black housing made of plastic recycled from ribbon cartridges. However, this “eco” model was more expensive than the standard model and not very successful.

A Gabriele “Color” model is made from semi-transparent plastic …

1 Olivetti acquired Triumph-Adler in April 1986. German typewriter production ended in 1991. By 1992, Triumph-Adler AG existed only as a distributorship.
