Archive for November, 2008

A real life testimony of how one witnessed the deaths of both parents before the age of 21, but instead of giving in to anorexia and depression, she rose up to be who she is today. In an article published in the November issue of Cleo magazine, Lim Jer Blinn, or Jerb, as she is affectionately known to most of us shared about how she coped with the loss of her parents and also having to grow up quicker than her peers in order to fill the very huge shoes that were left behind.

1998 was probably one of the worse, if not, the worst year that Jerb had to go through. It was the year whereby she was sitting for a major examination and having to watch her father go in and out of hospital before succumbing to lymphoma, made it worse. The passing on of her father took away more than just a physical presence, but it caused Jerb to develop depression as well. What makes matters worse was that two years later, her mother who was the sole breadwinner of the house passed away suddenly. Being the eldest of four siblings, Jerb had to quickly put aside her own emotions and together with her younger sister, they took over the running of the household.

Besides having to take care of her siblings, Jerb had to look after her ailing grandmother as well. They had to take turns to accompany her for her dialysis sessions, adding to the fact that she couldn’t be left alone as she was suffering from dementia. All these were done while they were still in school.

Through all these, Jerb was never once bitter but instead, she said, “I’m also in a better position to counsel my friends as I can genuinely empathize with them, and not just offer token words of advice or comfort.” We are often put through trials and tribulations, not because we deserve it, but because it’s through all these that we learn how to really have compassion of people as we ourselves went through it before.

Few would expect to see a droolworthy display of well-toned bods and gorgeous faces strutting their stuff in a church setting, but City Harvest Church put that traditional mindset to rest once and for all by holding a Manhunt and Beauty Pageant during their Emerge! Conference in 2007. Following the immense success of that event, the search has now begun for the next king and queen of good looks to be crowned at the upcoming Asia Conference 2008 this November.

The preliminaries were held on 2 October at the Research University for Leadership auditorium at The Riverwalk. Due to an overwhelming response, this round took more than four hours to wrap up. Contestants were put through a gruelling series of tests, consisting of a catwalk parade, self introduction and a Q&A session.

One of the judges, Pastor Audrey Ng explained that the judging criteria included physique, confidence, eloquence and overall appearance.

Many of the contestants had never walked a catwalk in their lives, much less take part in a pageant. But despite nerves, most maintained their poise throughout the competition. Some were even bold enough to throw in a few slick moves – this was certainly the perfect time to put to good use Pastor Kong Hee’s life motto of “zo lang ai zai” (Hokkien, meaning “be cool”).

When it came to the self introduction and public speaking segment, some of the non-Singaporean contestants faced a language barrier as English was not native to them. However, most came well-prepared and delivered their answers confidently.

More than just a chance to win the coveted title, this competition is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. “The Manhunt and Beauty Pageant is a platform for our members to display their talents in front of an audience, to step out in faith and do something they may not have dared to do previously,” says Pastor Audrey.

Contestant Desmond Tan echoes his views. “I wanted to invest in the talents God has given to me, to use those talents to glorify God,” he shares.

Another contestant, Michele Tan says that win or lose, she is here for the experience. “I just have fun out there,” she says.

The finals for the Manhunt and Beauty Pageant will be held during the Asia Conference 2008, which takes place from 19-23 November at Singapore Expo Hall 8.
